Small arrow tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black arrow with a crossbar and feathered fletching sits on the inner forearm of a raised arm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink looks dark and crisp against the skin. A hillside with dry grass and a clear blue sky fill the background.

By the third week of the autumn tour, the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Show had sold its elephant to a farm near Hexham, and the big top had more patches than canvas. I still did the archery act at the end of the programme, because Dad always said a show without a bow was just a fair. Nobody came to the back field for it any more. They came for the dog that could count.

The target was an old cart door with a crossbar nailed across it, the paint worn grey. Tom, who ran the lights and drove the lorry, used to stand against it with an apple balanced on his head while I took the apple off with a blunt shaft. Last Saturday the wind came off the moor with rain in it, and there were four people in the stands, two of them asleep. Tom wasn't there. He had walked up to the ridge on Thursday to look at a farm for sale and hadn't come back down.
I fetched the apple myself, set it on the crossbar, and walked out twenty paces. The fletching on my last arrow had come loose, so I had wound it with thread from Mam's sewing tin. I drew, thought about nothing, and let go. It sailed over the cart door, over the stands, and up the long brown slope where the grass lay flattened by the wind. I watched it until it was a thin dark line against the sky.
The wind dropped. Somewhere up the hill, a figure stopped walking and turned round, the way a man does when he hears his name. I packed the bow that night and left the apple on the crossbar. In the morning there was frost on the field, and beyond the last hedge, a line of boot prints going up.
