Small geometric tattoo of a black outlined triangle on the inner forearm, with a grey sleeve and bare winter trees behind.

Outlined triangle on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outlined triangle, pointing upwards, sits on the inner forearm of a pale-skinned arm. The lines are solid and even, with a plain unshaded interior, and the tattoo is the only element of the design. The photograph is taken outdoors against blue sky, bare trees and grass, with a grey sleeve covering the upper arm.

Uncle Ray taught me the mark before he taught me to fell. Three strokes with the blade's point, base flat, apex up, and the tree was spoken for. He never filled the shape in. 'Leave the middle clear,' he said, scraping sap off his thumb, 'so the light still gets down to the floor for whoever comes next.' I was nine and thought it was a rule about paint.

By the time I had the warrant for the Hollin copse, the oaks had been marked for forty winters and I had marked most of them myself. The estate man came with a clipboard and a tape measure and walked the rows with me, tapping each triangle and writing a number. Every time he said 'sound' or 'rot', I agreed with him, and the empty centres looked a little more like windows.

That evening I took a tin of ochre and a brush out to the first oak, meaning to fill the lines so the buyers would see something solid and pay for it. I dipped the brush, lifted it, and could not make myself touch the bark. Ray had never been talking about paint. A clear triangle tells the next man exactly where the wood stood and how much sky it let through.

On Monday I left the ochre in the van and walked the rows with a pencil. Beside each mark I wrote the year, then the name of the person who had planted the copse, then I left every middle clear.
