Small arrow tattoo on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised with the fingers curved, and a small arrow tattoo sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The arrow is drawn in thin, dotted linework in dark ink, with a shaft and a feathered head. The background is plain black, which keeps the focus on the skin and the small design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday, 14 March. The fen has finally given up its argument with the chain. Mr Pell says we can have the dotted line pegged to the sea wall by Friday if the wind holds off, so I have spent the whole morning walking ahead of the lads with a tin of red chalk, drawing a small arrow on every post, each one pointing the way the water must go.

The dots are the hard part. Mr Pell wants them spaced exactly one chain apart so the men can sight from post to post without the theodolite, and my hand keeps slipping on the wet wood. Tom Hobday laughed at my first attempt and said it looked like a row of crows that had lost their way. I told him crows do not carry the drainage plans of the Holbeach Level. He did not argue, which is the nearest I have had to an apology from him since Michaelmas.

Late, when the others had gone to the Crown, I found the old sketch Mr Pell keeps under his blotter. A surveyor named Ashby, who drowned in the great flood of 1852, had drawn the same dotted line, but his arrows point towards the land. I stood a long time with the lamp in one hand. Then I went back out with the chalk and left his arrows where they were, adding mine beside them, pointing the other way, so that tomorrow the men will have to choose.

Mr Pell will be cross. I have decided I do not mind. Tonight the marsh is silver under a half moon, and every post I passed carries two small heads, one looking in and one looking out. It is the most honest map I have ever made.
