The runner beans have gone over and the blackbird has taken to sitting on the water butt as if he pays the rent. I took the last of the bamboo canes down this morning, the ones your father used to bundle for his archery frame, and stacked them under the potting shed eaves where the damp can't reach. There were nine. He always said nine was lucky and never once explained why.

You'll remember the summer the arrows went over the back wall into Mrs Pardoe's rhubarb. Seven of them, fletched with feathers he'd plucked off the Coopers' gate, and she came round with each one held out like a summons. He paid for every broken stem. She kept the last arrow and hung it inside her porch, and I believe it's still there, gone grey.

Something about the canes made me think of the photographs you sent last month, your cousins holding their hands up to the window, each with a little arrow inked along one finger, all pointing the same way. I said they looked like bits of hedge stripped bare. You said it was so nobody in the family could ever claim to be lost. I thought that was the kindest thing I'd heard all year.

I'll post you the nine canes in the new year, tied with twine. Put them where you can see them from the kitchen. And if you ever want to know what the word on the forearm meant to your uncle, ask me. Breathe, it said. I think your grandfather would have liked that more than any target.
