Small fine line triangle, butterfly and swirl tattoos on
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with matte black nails rests against white fabric, showing three small tattoos: a solid black triangle on the side of one finger, a tiny butterfly on the inner wrist, and a looped swirl ornament on the palm side of the hand. The linework is thin and simple, with solid black fills on the triangle and no shading. The composition is close and soft, with the black tattoos contrasting against pale skin and bedding, and a black bracelet with a white peace sign charm sits on the wrist.

Dear Wren, the tide has gone out so far that the boats in the harbour lie on their sides like tired dogs, and Mr Pascoe has finally agreed to let me carry the old mainsail up to the net loft. I told him you'd have wanted it mended properly, not thrown on the bonfire with the rest of the summer's rubbish. He grumbled, but he gave me the needle anyway.

The loft smells of tar and damp wool. Under the grey canvas there's a small triangle of white cloth, the jib that Dad cut for you the year before he went out with the lobster boats. Its corner still has the blue thread he always used for stitching in our initials. Yesterday a swallowtail moth came in through the broken pane and settled on the lamp chain. It stayed so still I thought it was painted on, and when I reached for it the wings opened as if they'd been waiting for permission.
I found your note this morning, folded small and tucked into the hem where you used to hide sweets from Mam. You wrote that you'd come home when the swallows went south, and that you'd bring me a proper bottle of ink. I've pinned the moth to the wall above my sewing bench, wings spread, so it can watch the door. The jib is folded in the drawer for when you come home.
Tell Pascoe's boy the swirl carved on the bollard by the slipway is still there. I've not let anyone scrub it off. Some mornings I walk down just to trace it with my thumb, the way you did when we were small, and wait for the tide to turn so I can see the boats lift again.
Love always, Nell
