Small fine line tattoos on hands and wrists

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

This collage shows four close photographs of small tattoos on fingers and wrists, including a diamond, an eye, a heart, an arrow, an X and an O, and a short word on a wrist. The linework is thin and delicate, mostly black with a little shading, and the pink heart-shaped designs with short words on the fingers add colour. Each frame is cropped tightly around the hands, with the varied backgrounds of white fabric, foliage and a pool.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Our mother read every postcard that came into Harrow Street and most of the ones that left it, so Bea and I invented a language of marks that looked like nothing at all. A small diamond meant come to the back gate. An eye meant the landlady was listening. A heart drawn in biro meant I am not speaking to you, which was never true, and we both knew it. We practised on the back of the gas bill until the marks were quick enough to make in the time it took the kettle to whistle.

The summer Bea went to work at the fish market in Grimsby, she left me a list of them on a folded bus ticket. Cross for kisses, circle for hugs, an arrow pointing north for when she was coming home early. I kept the ticket in the tin with the buttons. For three weeks there was only ever a cross, then a circle, then a cross again, and I began to read them the way my nan read tea leaves, looking for the bad news I was sure was hiding underneath.

Then on a Tuesday there was a diamond scratched into the frost on my bedroom window, and I went down the stairs two at a time. She was standing at the back gate with her hands in her coat pockets and a sack of scallops at her feet. Neither of us said anything clever. She held up her wrist, then mine, and we pressed them together so the little marks lined up like a code cracked at last.
