Small spider on the neck behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small spider sits on the side of the neck, just below and behind the ear, shown in profile. The spider has a rounded, shaded abdomen and thin, sketchy legs drawn in black ink. The pale skin and dark hair give a simple, high-contrast composition.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Lark House remembered when the spider first arrived, only that the lift stopped working the same winter. Old Mrs Pryce said the spider kept an account. Whatever fell down the chute, a key, a button, a child's mitten, she caught on a thread and sent back up on the draught, so that by spring every door had its key again. Nobody paid her for this. People left sugar lumps on the windowsill and told her to mind her own business.
When the council men came with their clipboards and their talk of demolition, Dev Kaur, who was nine and stubborn, sat on the landing with a jam jar and a biscuit tin. "She's coming with us," he said. "Where's she going to go?" asked the man with the clipboard. Dev shrugged. The spider was already moving, a single line of silk running from the bin chute to the handrail, then down the lift shaft into the dark.
They moved everyone out in March, and the tower came down on a Tuesday in a grey cloud that hung over the ring road for an hour. Weeks later, on the new estate across the road, a boy found a black spider in his wellies and carried it out on a leaf. Her thread was already strung between the lamp post and the fence, and caught in it, glinting, was a small brass key that had dropped from somebody's pocket.
