The lift to the fourth floor stuck again at ten past three, so I took the stairs with a tray of dressings and a cold cup of tea I had no intention of drinking. Ward 4B was quiet in the way that always makes me nervous. Mr Okafor in bed six had been asking for his daughter, who lives in Leeds and rings at odd hours. I told him she would ring again at five. He said bees don't keep office hours, and I laughed, because he had once told me he kept two hives on his allotment and had lost one to a wet spring.

At four a bee got into the sluice room. I have no idea how. It was a fat, sleepy thing, banging against the frosted window as if the glass owed it money. I got a plastic beaker and a sheet of card and talked it down, the way my gran used to with wasps in her kitchen in Huddersfield. It walked onto the card and sat there, wings half open, looking more put out than frightened. I carried it to the window by the car park, lifted the sash, and it went up into the orange light of the lamps without a backward glance.

By the time the sun came up over the multi-storey, Mr Okafor was awake and watching the window. His daughter had rung at five, as I'd promised her. I handed him the phone and he held it with both hands. When he gave it back, he said, "Did you let one go?" I said yes. He nodded, satisfied, as if that settled a debt between us, and I went off to find my breakfast.
