Small bird tattoo on the back of the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a person from behind with a short, layered auburn pixie cut and a dark floral shirt with a high collar. A small black bird silhouette sits on the back of the neck just below the hairline, with simple, solid linework. The soft, blurred outdoor background and muted colours keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My father carried the cage down Chapel Row the morning after the roof came in at Ashworth Drift, though nobody had asked him to. Inside it a coal tit hopped from perch to perch, a scrap of black and white no bigger than a walnut. The men had laughed at him for keeping it. A bird the colour of the pit itself, they said, was no use to anyone, and it had been dull to look at since the day he took it from a hole in the spoil heap.

By noon the rescue men had been digging for hours in the wrong place, shovelling where the old plan said the roadway ran. Dad stood at the top of the shaft with the cage held against his chest and watched the little bird press itself to the wire nearest the dust. Every few minutes it flew to the far side, then back, always towards the same patch of blackened stone. Nobody liked to say it, but the air was moving there. Dad knew that feeling. He had learned it with his cheeks in forty years of work, the faint cold breath that means a way through.

'Dig there,' he said, and when the foreman hesitated he said it again, louder. They dug. Hours later the first knock came through the rock, three taps and a pause, then three more, and a cheer went up that the women at the top of the lane could hear.

The bird was the first thing out of the cage when the lamps came up the lane. It flew straight to Dad's shoulder, settled just beneath his collar, and stayed there until the sun was over the chapel roof.
