Small birds across upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair in a loose bun is photographed from behind, facing away from the camera, wearing a white off-the-shoulder top. Seven or so small dark bird silhouettes trail diagonally from the nape of the neck down across the upper back, with the largest near the top and the smallest lowest. The photograph is monochrome with soft indoor lighting, and a framed mirror and door are visible in the background.

Signalman Walt Hesketh had logged the starlings for thirty-one years, and in all that time they had never once left the gantry together without him writing down the count. Seven, most mornings. The big cock bird always went first, a stone thrown up off the lamp housing, and the rest followed in order of size, each one a little smaller than the last until the final bird was barely more than a fleck against the grey sky over the goods yard.

On the Monday his daughter Frances was catching the 6.52 south with one suitcase and a coat too thin for the Pennines. She had said she would not wave from the platform, and she didn't. She stood under the canopy with her hands in her pockets, watching the signal arm drop, while Walt watched the gantry through the box window with his tea going cold beside the lever frame.

The starlings lifted as the train drew out. Seven, as always, but when the last one peeled away it turned back, circled the box twice and settled on the windowsill, eight inches from his elbow. It was smaller than the others, its feathers dulled as though it had been dragged through soot, and it looked at him sideways with one bright eye.

Walt opened the ledger and wrote seven, then crossed it out and wrote eight. He did not know what it meant that the eighth had stayed behind, only that it had come back to the one who was left to count.
