Small bat tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small solid black bat silhouette sits on the top of a finger, with its wings spread horizontally. The ink is a flat, uniform black with no visible shading or fine detail. The plain pale wall behind the hand keeps the focus on the small tattoo, with a pale blue-grey nail polish visible at the fingertip.

Dear Tom,

The bat came back to the sorting room again last night, through the gap under the eaves where the slates slipped after the gale. Mr Ashby says it's the same one that roosted above the pigeon loft all summer, and I believe him, because it hangs off the lintel exactly where you used to hang your coat, upside down and folded like a glove someone has forgotten.

You'll laugh, but I've been using the old cancellation stamp on the parcels this week, and it's the only thing in the office that looks anything like that creature. Dad had it cut from a scrap of black rubber the year the forest path was first surveyed, a flat little bat with its wings spread, so every sack from Bramwell Wood would be marked as ours. Nobody's needed it since the van started coming round on Tuesdays.

Mrs Oakes came in this morning for a stamp and asked whether there had been any post for the Wardens' cottage. There hasn't been since the spring. I told her the forest keeps its letters to itself, which made her cross, and then she laughed, which I was glad of.

I'm sending this one with the bat on it. I pressed the stamp down hard myself so the wings came out clean, the way you taught me when I was small. If you get it, you'll know the lamp in the front window is still lit.
