Smile script and smiley on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A finger carries the word smile in thin black cursive script, with a small outlined smiley face beside it. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. A Nikon camera with its lens in the foreground fills the rest of the frame, and a bright light flare sits at the top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dorothy Vane had photographed three christenings, two funerals and a prize marrow, and she had never once been thanked by the subject. Today it was the Pennick family reunion in the back garden of the Crown in Wrexley, forty-one cousins jostling under a gazebo, and Uncle Bernard standing with his arms folded like a bailiff.

"Smile, Bernard," she said, and he did not.

She tried the old trick of asking about his allotment. He told her about slugs. She tried the joke about the robin. He told her the robin had been hers. By the time the light turned orange over the bowling green, she had three hundred frames of grim faces and one of her own reflection in the pub door, eyebrows raised like a startled owl.

So she did the thing her grandmother had taught her. She uncapped a fine black pen, wrote SMILE along the side of her own finger in joined-up letters, and drew a small round face beside it with two dots and a curve. She held the hand up the way a conjuror shows a card. Bernard frowned at it, then, against every principle he had ever read out at the parish council, laughed so hard he had to sit on the wall.

She got the shot. It hangs above the bar at the Crown now, in a frame Bernard paid for himself, and nobody has ever asked why the photographer's finger is in the corner of it, grinning back at him.
