Small black cat tattoo on the side of the hip

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple cartoon-style black cat sits in solid black ink on bare skin, with a raised paw and large round eyes in outline. The cat is set against the pale skin above a white waistband, with a hand and a flower ring visible at the top of the frame. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph with soft lighting and a dark background, and the tattoo is the clear focal point.

The cat is already halfway up the larch when you reach the stile, tail lashing like a loose bootlace. She looks down at you with eyes too large for her face, as if you are the one who is late. The letter for Mrs Haddow sits in your coat pocket, folded twice, its wax seal gone soft after three miles of bracken and one wrong turn at the gamekeeper's gate. A cat should not be able to make a postman feel scolded, but she manages it.

You follow because the bell at St Ebba's has not rung for a lost child since Michaelmas, and because she keeps stopping on the path to check you are still there. The oaks lean together over the track until the light goes the colour of weak tea. She drops from a branch without a sound and trots ahead, and at every fork she lifts one paw, neat as a clerk pointing at a ledger. Once you think you hear a door somewhere far off, then nothing but the tick of cooling pine.

The cottage is smaller than it should be, its thatch furred with moss, and Mrs Haddow is not in it. There is only a kettle on a cold hob and a chair turned to face the window. Propped against the sugar bowl is an envelope in your own handwriting, sealed and dated for tomorrow. You do not remember writing it. The cat settles on the sill beside it and watches you open it with the patience of something that has done this many times before.

Inside is a single line: Thank you for coming the long way round. Come back when the bell rings. You look up, and the cat raises her paw, and the wood, very politely, closes behind you.
