Single-line cat on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo shows a cat seen from behind, sitting and looking over its shoulder, with whiskers and a long curling tail. The linework is thin and continuous, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a dark background, with a white top visible at the left edge.

Dear Maud,

You will think I have finally lost my wits, writing to you at this hour from the kitchen of the flat on Calder Street, but the cat has come back and I could not sleep for wondering whether to tell you. It is the grey one from the chapel steps, the one with the notch in its left ear. Mr Okafor downstairs says it belongs to nobody, which is what he says about everything that eats from his bins.
Last night I was crossing the yard behind the laundrette gone midnight, the streetlamp buzzing like a trapped wasp, and I heard it before I saw it. It was sitting on the wall with its back to me, tail wrapped round its feet, and when I said hello it turned its head right round over its shoulder and looked at me as if I were the one who had come late. Then it simply looked away again, as though the matter was settled and I might go on home.
I have been trying to decide whether that was rudeness or a kindness. You always said cats only look back at you when they have decided you are worth the trouble. I took a bit of ham from the paper in my coat pocket and set it on the bricks, then climbed the stairs without once turning round myself, which I suppose is a sort of answer.
This morning the ham was gone, and there was a single grey hair caught in the mortar of the wall, fine as a stroke of ink. I have folded it into the envelope with this letter. Come up at the weekend and we will see whether the cat is still there to be looked at.
