Small black cross tattoo at the nape of the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph taken from behind of a woman with her hair tied up and one hand raised to her head. A small, solid black cross sits at the base of the neck, between the shoulder blades. The linework is simple and dark, with no colour, and the plain background of a pale wall and curtain keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Ysolde,

The ink arrived at Hallam Reach three weeks after you left, packed in a tin that still smelled of the coast. Master Corrin has forbidden me to open the second drawer, so I have kept my hands busy with the surveys instead. Yesterday I walked the old salt road from the kiln towns to the ferry, counting milestones, and at the fork below the pale quarry I found the stone you described to me in March: a cross cut into the rock, its arms worn to the width of a thumb.

Nobody in the district will say who cut it. The herdsmen call it the crossing-mark and tell children to touch it before they cross the river, but when I asked why, the oldest woman in Stennet only laughed and said the river had been worse before the mark, and better after. I did not write that down as fact. I wrote it in the margin, next to the bearing.

I have sealed this with the spare wax from your tin. If the courier goes by the north road, the rain will have it soaked by Thursday, so burn it if it arrives ruined. Tell Corrin the drawer is still shut. Tell him I kept my promise, and that I touched the stone for both of us before I turned for home.

Yours in the dry season, Ansel
