Safety pin tattoo on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small safety pin is tattooed on the inner forearm, drawn in a clean outline with the pin's coil at the lower end and the clasp at the top. The linework is thin and dark blue, with a pale, unshaded band along the pin's body that shows the skin tone. The pin sits centred on a plain background of skin, with a little of another dark tattoo at the right edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The hem of Tom's coat tore on the blackthorn at the edge of Ashby Wood, and by the time he stumbled out into the lane the whole left side hung open like a letter nobody wanted to read. Mother had no grey thread in the house, so she took the big brass safety pin from the jar on the dresser and worked it through the cloth herself, quick and sure, folding the wool back on itself until the gap was shut.

That pin was older than either of us. It had held Grandfather's cuffs together when he came up from the pit at Clayford, and it had kept the chapel curtain closed through two winters of gales. Mother said a pin asked nothing of the cloth except that it stay still for a moment. I thought that was a cheat, metal doing the work of stitches, until the coat caught on the gate a fortnight later and the pin held while the sleeve tore free around it.

Tom went back into the trees that autumn with the dogs and a lantern and a boy's pride, and came out four days after with nothing but a scratch down his cheek and a story about a fox that grew bigger each time he told it. He never once mentioned the pin, but he started wearing it on the inside of his collar, where nobody could see.

When it was my turn to go up past the last cottage, I pinned a strip of grey wool to the final birch before the trees closed over the path. I left the pin open on its catch, so the bright end would catch the light and show whoever came after me which way was home.
