Small black script lettering tattoo on an ankle, beside brown lace-up heeled sandals on a grey floor.

Small script tattoo on an ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Bare legs are shown crossed at the ankles, wearing brown suede lace-up sandals with a peep toe and a chunky block heel. A small, rotated line of dark grey script sits on the ankle, with thin, even strokes. The plain grey background and tight crop at the knees keep the focus on the tattoo and the shoes.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Mr Pemberton, I am writing about the brown suede sandals that have been sitting in the lift lobby on the fourteenth floor since Tuesday. I know you asked us not to touch anything left near the bins, but they were set neatly side by side, laces undone, heels facing the door, as if someone had stepped out of them to knock on a flat and then thought better of it.

I have looked after Carrow House for thirty-one years and I have learned that nothing here is ever left by accident. The lift has broken twice this month, the boiler sings at night, and Mrs Adeyemi on eleven still leaves her milk bottles out for the foxes. So when the shoes appeared, I took a photograph and sent it to the residents' group. Dennis from nine said they were the sort his daughter wore to a wedding in Margate. Nobody claimed them.

Last night I found a pencil on the stairwell windowsill, and under it a scrap of paper with one word written in small, slanting capitals: STAY. It was dated the Tuesday. I have put it in the envelope with this letter. If you would rather I took the shoes down to the lost property box at the station, say so. Otherwise I will keep the lobby light on and wait for whoever is missing one of a pair.

Yours in the building, Maureen Doyle, caretaker, flat 4.
