Small black lion silhouette on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a walking lion in solid black silhouette sits on the top of a foot, with the mane, tail and legs filled in with no interior detail. The foot rests on a pale blue paper towel, and the photograph is taken from a slight angle with even lighting. The ink is black only, with the skin showing a warm tone around it.

The lamp over the range swung on its chain every time the Maria Ysolde took a wave on the beam, and the shadows in the galley swung with it. Nobody aboard liked to say so, but Teodor, the cook's mate, watched the wall more than the pans. He was nineteen and had come from a village above Porto with a paper bag of his grandmother's bread and nothing else he could call his own.

The lion came on the third night out from Tilbury. It was only the shape of the pot-rack thrown big against the bulkhead, but the lamp swung left and it walked. Head low, mane like a burnt collar, tail curled up at the end like a question. I told him it was the rack. He said racks don't hunt. I didn't argue. I was the one who had taught him to scour the rice pan with sand, and a lad who will do that will see anything.
Each night after the watch changed he stood under the lamp, made the shape with his hands, then leaned his whole arm into the swing so the lion stalked the length of the galley and back. The engineers started knocking on the hatch to ask what the racket was. By the Bay of Biscay the lion had learned the ship's roll better than either of us.
Off Gibraltar the lamp cracked and the galley went dark for an hour. When we lit the spare, the wall was bare. Teodor had gone forward to the hold and was asleep on a sack of flour with his hands still curled into a shape. I left the lamp swinging, and on the bulkhead, very small and very black, the lion walked out of the light and did not come back.
