Dinosaur and footprints on a foot

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black outline of a walking dinosaur, likely a theropod, sits on the outer side of the foot near the ankle, facing towards the toes. A trail of small dark footprints climbs up from behind the creature across the skin. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the photograph shows the design in black ink on pale skin against a dark red surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift had been out since Tuesday, so Nadia took the stairs with a carrier bag of shopping pressing its handles into her fingers. On the landing between the ninth and tenth floors someone had left a line of small prints in the grey dust on the concrete, three-toed and neat, climbing upward the way a dog climbs when it has decided to go somewhere on its own.

Her nephew Kofi had been insisting all week that the dinosaur from the museum shop had got out of his bedroom. He had drawn it on the back of a council letter, a thin black outline with a long tail, and taped it to the fridge where it stared at everyone who came in for milk. "It's been walking," he said, when she told him about the lift. "It doesn't like lifts."

At the fourteenth floor the prints stopped at her own door mat. Nadia stood there with the bag cutting into her hand and felt foolish, then saw the dust continuing past her along the corridor, toward Mrs Okafor's flat, where the radio murmured through the wall. A small grey sock lay against the skirting board. She picked it up, meaning to take it to the lost property box in the lobby.

Inside, Kofi was asleep on the sofa with the lamp still on. The dinosaur sat on the windowsill, nose pressed to the glass, looking down at the car park as if it had been out for a walk and was only now thinking about its tea. Nadia set the shopping down, dried her palms on her jeans, and went to look for the other sock.
