Paw prints and script on a foot
Dotwork · Other · Mixed · Photo
Four black paw prints and a partial fifth are built from fine stippled dots across the foot, with a larger paw print at the base of the toes. Above them, a scrolled script word is outlined in dark ink with small pink and lilac hearts and shaded swirls, giving a mix of solid and dotted textures. Black ink dominates the paw prints, while the hearts and parts of the lettering use muted purple and pink, set against a plain light background.

The rain had been coming down on the market since six, and by ten the cobbles between the fish stalls were shining like wet slate. I was dragging the tarpaulin over my tins of marmalade when the spaniel trotted under the awning with half a bread roll in her mouth. Nobody shouts at a dog carrying bread. She dropped it on my boots, shook herself over the jam, and looked up at me as if we'd agreed on something.

Her tag said NELL and a telephone number that rang out in the cold. Dorothy on the flower stall knew her and said she belonged to nobody in particular, which is what the market says about the strays it loves. So I unhooked the spare lead from my awning pole and we went looking. Nell didn't need leading. She went straight through the puddles outside the butcher's, past the pet shop with its shutters half down, and every few yards the wet cobbles held a fresh set of prints, four pads and a bigger heel, pressed dark into the grey.
They led us to the old drinking fountain by the gate, where the paving is older than anyone's grandmother. Someone had set a square of cement there years back, and in it a row of small pads had dried hard, with the name MAGGIE scratched in beside them by a stick or a nail. Nell sniffed it once, sat down beside it, and her tail thumped the stone in a slow, certain rhythm, as if she was keeping time with the rain.
I stood there with the lead slack in my hand while water ran off the awning in a thin silver line. Then a woman came through the gate pulling a tartan shopping trolley and called, "Nell, you dreadful thing," and the dog got up. The prints she left behind filled slowly with rain until they were nothing but small pools shining under the lamp.
