A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the fire, because the swallow won't wait for cold hands. Your great-grandfather's brother, Tobias Vane, lost his dog in the beech wood the week the ice went out. He went looking past the last stile, where the village stops and the trees don't bother to pretend they belong to anyone.

The wood was full of cloud that year, grey as wet slate, and nothing moved in it but a single small bird, forked-tailed and quick, going ahead of him from branch to branch. Every time he stopped, it stopped. Every time he called the dog's name, it flicked its wings once, the way a man nods when he agrees with you. It had blue on its back, like a scrap of sky someone had dropped into the grey and forgotten to pick up, and a pale breast with a warm rust smudge under the throat, like a thumbprint of ash.

It led him to a hollow under the roots of an oak, where the dog lay with its leg caught in a snare. The swallow perched on the rim and sang the first clean notes anyone had heard from that wood since autumn. Tobias cut the wire and carried the dog out. When he looked up, the bird was already over the treetops, heading for the mill roof where the eaves are, and he understood it had been going home all along and he had only been following.

So that's why we leave the nests be. Every spring the swallows come back to the mill, and every spring someone's wife wants the eaves scraped, and every spring old Harold Pike says no. Mind now, the fire's going down, and I'm not telling you the end twice.
