Small bottle and sun tattoos on upper arms
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two people stand side by side, seen from behind, with their arms linked at the elbows. The person on the left has a small black bottle tattoo on the upper arm, and the person on the right has a tiny sun above the word Aloha on their upper arm. Both tattoos use thin, simple linework in black ink against bare skin, with a striped top and green foliage in the background.

The postcard had been wedged behind the till for three weeks before Nell found it, sun-bleached along one edge, a palm tree printed in the corner. Her brother had written a single word on the back in capitals that leaned as if walking into wind: ALOHA. Beneath it he had drawn a sun in biro, rays tapering to nothing, and no address, no explanation, nothing about when he would be back from wherever the cruise ships took him.

She carried it down the slipway to Maud's lemonade stall on the Margate front, where the glass bottles were lined up in the sun like a row of small green lanterns. Maud read it twice, licked her thumb, and reached for the bottle on the shelf above the sink. It was the one Declan had posted in March, seawater-cloudy, its cork sealed in red wax, with a rolled note inside that said only: wait for the sun to come round. They had argued about that note for weeks. Maud said it was a joke. Nell said it was a map.
That afternoon they filled a fresh bottle from the big jug, stoppered it, and Maud wrote on a strip of brown paper in her square hand: here is the sun, come back for the lemonade. Nell pressed a tiny bottle sketch onto the corner with her thumb, because it was the only mark she could make that looked like a promise. At low tide they walked out along the sand to where the water was just turning, and Nell threw it as far as her arm would go. The bottle bobbed, dipped, then caught the light and swung east toward the horizon, toward wherever Declan was. Maud hooked her elbow through Nell's, and neither of them said that the tide was coming in.
