Cactus and palm tattoos on two upper arms
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arms rest side by side, each wearing a sleeve: one in pink fabric and one in pale blue denim. The tattoos are simple black outlines of desert plants, including a wavy cactus on the left arm and a palm tree, a saguaro cactus and a small sprig on the right arm. The linework is thin and even, with little or no shading, and the image is entirely black ink against skin.

The band has stopped to tune, and the ceiling fan above the bar is turning slowly enough that you can count the blades. You stand by the coat hooks with your back against the brass rail, because Marisol said she was only going to the ladies' and that was twenty minutes ago. Someone has pinned a paper star to the wall for the Harvest Waltz, and its corners are curling in the heat from the open door.

Eddie Quill crosses the floor with two bottles of root beer and a look that says he has been practising. He asks you to dance. You tell him you are waiting for someone, and he leans on the rail beside you and talks about the palm the council planted outside the sheriff's office, how it browned in a week because nobody thought a palm might want more water than the desert allowed. You tell him the saguaros on the ridge above Cinder Flats don't need anybody to look after them. He laughs at that longer than it deserves.
Marisol comes back through the crowd with her hair pinned up and a lipstick mark gone crooked, holding two paper cups of lemonade like a peace offering. She says the car keys are in her jacket and the jacket is on you. She says the last waltz will start in six minutes and nobody will notice two people slipping out before it.
You take the cup, drink half of it, and walk out into the dark lot where the air smells of dust and cooling tin. Up on the ridge the saguaros hold their arms out in the moonlight, as if they have been waiting all evening to be noticed by someone passing through.
