Lotus and swirl tattoo behind the ear

Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo

A close-up of a small lotus-style floral tattoo behind an ear, drawn in black outline with curled swirl stems at the base. Three small purple dots sit beneath the swirls, and there is no shading, so the linework is flat and clean. The ear and several metal stud and hoop piercings fill the frame, with a person's dark hair visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming off the market roof in ropes since seven, and by ten the gutters over Stall 14 were spilling onto my boots. Dad always said you could sell anything in the wet if you kept it dry, so I kept the tubs under the awning and the lotus bucket wedged between two crates of marrows.

Mr Ferreira came for his bulb at half past eleven, the way he had every Saturday since March. He didn't waste words. He lifted the cloth from the bucket, looked at the knobbled root sitting in its murky water, and said, "Not yet, then." It was what he'd said the week before, and the week before that. I had stopped asking what he was waiting for.

Then the wind swung round, the awning sagged, and a sheet of water poured straight into the bucket. I grabbed for it without thinking and tipped the whole lot over the edge. Grey silt, pale roots and one fat bulb rolled across the wet concrete. Mr Ferreira knelt in the puddle, quick as a boy, and cupped it in both hands. The skin had split at one end. A green curl was unfurling there, tight as a fiddlehead, and beside it three small violet shoots had pushed through the crack, neat as if someone had dotted them on with a pen.

"There," he said, and paid me for the bulb in coins he'd been keeping in his coat since spring. I rinsed the bucket out afterwards and filled it with clean water. I still check it every Saturday, though nothing has come up since, and the rain on the roof sounds different now that I know what it's for.
