We ran into a gale off the Horn and the sea took the galley door clean off its hinges. For three days nobody slept properly, and each morning after the watch the prints were there on the wet deck, starting at the companionway and walking forward to the bow as if someone small had gone looking for land. Old Abel says it is a sign and crosses himself every time he sees them. I say it is a cat who likes the bow because the rail stays warm there and the spray keeps off.
