Small butterfly on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind sits with her head bowed, wearing a loose white off-shoulder top. A small butterfly is tattooed on the back of her shoulder, drawn in thin black linework with little or no shading. The plain light background and soft even lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Marguerite Penhale had been counting the boats in and out of Porthkennow for forty years, and the butterfly that settled on the wet mooring rope that morning was the first thing in a fortnight that had not come in on a tide. It was no bigger than a fingernail, its wings drawn in a single thin line, as if whoever made it had been careful not to press too hard.

She carried it indoors on a folded page torn from the harbour ledger, because the nets were still drying on the quay and nobody else had noticed it. Her nephew Tobias, who had sailed to Brittany and back on the Mary Jane without a word of French, said butterflies that crossed open water were bad luck. Marguerite told him the sea had nothing to do with it. Most things in Porthkennow arrived by accident, usually tangled in a jumper or a fishing net, and this was no different.
For three days she kept it on the kitchen windowsill in a jam jar with holes punched in the lid. It did not eat. It did not fly. On the fourth morning Tobias came up the hill with a letter from the harbourmaster at Roscoff, asking whether anyone in Cornwall had seen a dented tin box with a painted butterfly on its lid, lost from a ferry in the spring. Marguerite read the letter twice, then looked at the jar.
She unscrewed the lid and held out the ledger page. The butterfly stepped onto it, lifted its wings once, and turned towards the harbour mouth, slow and certain, as though it had only ever been waiting for someone to point the way.
