Small butterfly tattoo on a hip
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A cropped photograph of a woman's midriff and hip, with her hand resting on her stomach. A small butterfly tattoo, drawn in black or dark grey ink with simple outlines and light shading, sits on the hip beside the waistband of pale blue bikini bottoms. The background is plain and light, and the composition keeps the focus on the tattoo and skin.

The lorry had been idling at the barrier for forty minutes when Tomas finally walked round to its cab, torch in one hand and the clipboard under his arm. The driver had his window down and his papers ready before Tomas asked for them. He kept glancing past Tomas at the floodlights, where moths were circling in slow loops, as if he were counting them.

The trailer held forty crates of nursery stock stamped for a grower in the next valley. Tomas ran the torch along the labels, then along the splintered lid of the last crate, where a monarch had come in on the draught and stopped, wings folded, on the bare wood. Regulations said plant matter went to the bonded shed. Regulations said nothing about insects, and he was not going to be the man who wrote them a new clause at two in the morning.
The butterfly lifted when he reached for the tin on the top shelf, an old biscuit tin with a painted lid, the kind his mother had kept buttons in. It was not on the manifest. He prised the lid off with his pen. Inside, wrapped in waxed paper, were milkweed seeds and a folded note in his sister's careful capitals: FOR MAM'S BORDER BED, DON'T LET THEM TELL YOU IT'S ONLY WEEDS.
Tomas read it twice. Then he wrote Nothing to declare across the sheet, signed beneath it, and handed the driver back his papers. The barrier rose. The monarch went out ahead of the lorry's tail lights, climbing above the hedge and turning once over the tarmac before it was lost in the dark on the far side.
