Black and grey rose tattoo on an arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a white crochet bikini stands on a sandy beach, with her face cropped out of frame. A large black and grey rose tattoo with shaded petals and leaves covers her left upper arm and forearm, and a metal bracelet sits on the wrist. The soft natural light and pale sand keep the focus on the tattoo and the bikini's open lattice texture.

I told him I had never seen a rose so honest. You asked in your last letter whether we still grow anything worth drawing. We do, and I have started to draw it, since the abbot has forbidden us to paint.

The bush came over from the sea farm at Holm Point in a sack of seaweed, wrapped in an old net that the fishermen's widows had knotted for us in exchange for salt. Those women knot the way you crochet, Maud, looping thread through thread until the holes matter as much as the rope. I have thought about it every evening since, watching the wind come off the sands and lift the rose's leaves into the same open pattern.
On Tuesday the storm tore the ivy from the south wall and left the rose standing, stripped to its thorns. Brother Tobias wept and called it a judgement. I called it a good strong root. This morning there were three buds, grey at the edges as if someone had breathed on them, and the light through the broken glass fell across the gravel like a net laid out to dry.
I am sending you a pressed petal. Keep it out of the damp, and do not let the novices near the prayer book with it.
