Sun tattoo on the side of the abdomen

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows a close view of a bare midriff with a navel piercing and a single sun motif tattooed on the right side of the abdomen. The sun has a solid dark circle at its centre and long, tapering, flame-like rays of solid black ink. The ink is a uniform dark grey-black against warm skin tones, and the composition is tightly cropped around the torso.

Dear Nell,

The big top came down in Wrexham on Tuesday, and I am writing this from the back of the lorry with the canvas still smelling of wet sawdust. Mr Pelham wanted the old sun taken down before we packed, the one he painted himself in 1961 when the company still had two elephants and a brass band that could hold a tune. It hung above the centre ring for years, a black disc with rays spiking out to the edges, and when the lamps were lit behind it the tent looked as if it had its own weather.

Pelham couldn't bring himself to cut it loose, so Joss and I rolled it up with the poles. Where the sun had caught the daylight through the flap the paint had kept its colour; everywhere else it had faded to the grey of old porridge. Joss asked what we'd do with it, and Pelham said nothing. He sat on a crate, smoked, and watched it go into the tarpaulin like a man listening to his own name read out at a roll call.

On the drive out he told me the trick of a sun is that every ray points away from the middle, so the light always has somewhere to go. Joss said that was a poor reason to keep a rotten old sheet. I cut a strip from the edge where the flames are thickest and have folded it into this envelope, so you have something from the last week we were a circus and not just a van with a sign on it. Write back and tell me whether the new theatre in Hull has a ring that holds up.

Love, Frances
