Gideon had sold forty-nine balloons outside the kebab shop on Bridgewater Street, and he was counting coins in his coat pocket when the bear first let go. It was a small bear, no bigger than a thumb in the lamplight, and it had hold of the string of the one round balloon he had kept back for himself. He had tied the knot in a hurry, and now the knot was undone and the string was slipping through his fingers.

He ran. His shoes slapped the wet pavement, which held the orange glow of the bingo hall sign like a dropped reflection. He pushed past two students arguing about chips and skidded round the bollards at the corner, but the balloon rose steadily over the terraced roofs, level with the chimneys, the bear dangling below it like a bell clapper that had forgotten to ring.

A night cleaner on the third floor of the library lifted a mug to the window. A boy on a bike shouted that it was a sign. Gideon stood in the road with empty hands while the bear turned slowly in the air, one arm raised as if it were waving at someone who had gone home. The string snagged on a van aerial for a moment, and it seemed the whole business might end there. Then a gust came up off the canal and the string tore free.

He did not chase it again. He went back to his stall, counted the coins a second time, and found a brass fairground token he had never seen before, pressed flat in the corner of his palm. He dropped it into the tin, locked up, and walked home the long way, looking up. Somewhere over Ancoats a small bear was still rising, and Gideon decided that was a fair price for one balloon.
