Scissors and dashed cut line on abdomen

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A pair of open scissors sits at the top of a dashed line that runs diagonally down towards the waistband of jeans. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. A faint scar-like line is visible beneath the dashed line, and a hand with red nails rests on the upper abdomen in the frame.

Sit nearer the range, the wind's come round to the north and it has teeth tonight. You'll want to hear how old Edith Holroyd cut the Dunmore coat, because she never once put her shears to cloth without a line drawn first.

The winter the beck froze to the bottom, the squire's son came up the lane with a bolt of grey wool and a fistful of coins. He wanted a coat cut in an afternoon, no fitting, no pins. Edith looked at the bolt, then at him, and took up a stick of blue chalk. She drew a dashed line straight down the middle of the wool, then the little open shears at the top of it, the way her mother had taught her, so nobody could say afterwards they hadn't been warned.

He laughed at her. Cut it where you like, he said, it's only wool. So she handed him the shears and told him to start at the top, where the scissors were. He did. He snipped along the dashes quick and proud, like a boy with a paper doll, and the cloth parted in his hands into two thin strips with a gap between them the width of his own impatience.

Edith took the wool back without a word and sewed the strips together again, the chalk still showing through the stitches. The squire's son wore that coat to church every Sunday after, and the sleeves never quite met at the wrist, but nobody in the parish ever asked him why.
