Multicolour world map on a wrist
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A raised hand with the palm facing the camera shows a world map drawn as a thin outline across the inner wrist. The continents are traced in single lines in red, orange, green and blue, with Africa and Asia clearly defined. The background is softly blurred and the skin is evenly lit, so the linework is easy to see.

Dear Tom, the tracing paper came on Tuesday, and I have spent two evenings with it under the desk lamp, which is why this letter is late and why your aunt says I have ink on everything except the envelope.

The outline is for the wedding, as promised. I copied it from the old Mercator in the study, the one with the cracked spine your mother hid from you as a boy. I used four fine pens only: blue for the northern coasts, green for Africa and the edges of the Indian Ocean, orange for Asia and the long curl of Australia, and red for the Americas and Europe. Pippa asked why Europe is red too, and I told her the Victorians did it so an empire could be seen at a glance. That is nonsense. I simply liked how the red sat beside the blue.
I left the lines open where the paper curled, so the outline stops short at a few edges. Africa I drew last and slowly, because it is the shape I always get wrong. The Horn stuck out like a thumb and I had to take it out twice. Pippa says I am being fussy. Perhaps I am. But a map should admit where it doesn't know the coast.
Bring your glasses to the church. I'll have the original folded in my jacket pocket, and when the vicar asks for the rings I will hand it over, and you can tell me whether the Cape looks right. Yours, Uncle Edmund.
