Small cat silhouette behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black cat silhouette sits on the skin behind the ear, with the tail curling to the left and the head raised. The design has no internal linework or shading, so it reads as a flat filled shape. The photograph is black and white, framed like a Polaroid, with the ear and short hair at the hairline visible around the tattoo.

"What do you want?" he asked it, leaning on his spade. The cat did not answer, being a cat, but when he went back to the keep it followed, padding over the rubble where the roof had fallen in his grandfather's time. Every night it climbed to the one tower still standing and sat in the window with its head raised, looking east across the marsh toward the mill road, where the lamps of travelling men came and went.

The valley folk said the cat counted the lamps. When there were fewer than the night before, it went down the stair and out to the mill and came back with a stray dog, or a boy, or once a sack of flour someone had dropped in the ditch. The steward kept a ledger of everything that belonged to the keep, as his mother had taught him, but the cat was never written in it, and he found he did not want it to be.

On the night the bells were finally dug up, he found the cat in the window with its back to the room. Below, on the road, one lamp was going out. He lifted the oldest bell from its straw and carried it down the stair, and the cat came after him without hurrying, as if it had only ever been waiting for someone to take the first step.
