Small cat silhouette tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of a cat, shown mid-stride with its tail raised, sits on the side of an ankle. The shape is filled in with black ink and has no shading or fine detail. The background is a leopard print loafer and a pale wall, so the image is mostly warm beige and brown tones.

Nobody on Ward 7 could say where the cat had come from, only that it arrived the week the lifts broke and that it walked the corridors as if it had been hired. Tonight it was ahead of me at half two, nose in the air, when the call bell chimed from bay four and then stopped, as if whoever pressed it had thought better of it. I was carrying two sets of observations and a cup of tea gone cold. The cat did not look back. It went straight to the bay, slipped under the curtain and sat down beside Mr Okonedo, who had been asleep since midnight and was now awake, staring at the ceiling with the stillness of a man deciding whether he was brave enough to ask for something.

He wanted his daughter. She had rung at eleven to say she would come in the morning, and he had decided, somewhere between the crisp packet and the late news, that morning was too far away. I sat on the plastic chair and we talked about her, and the cat settled on the blanket over his feet as though it had been invited.

When her name had been said three times and the tea was finally warm, I looked up and the cat was gone. It had gone back out under the curtain, tail still high, walking on towards the lift that wasn't working. Mr Okonedo smiled and said he had always been a cat person. I wrote the time on the board and carried on down the corridor myself.
