Hello Kitty tattoos on both feet
Other · Colour · Photo
Two matching Hello Kitty face designs sit on the top of each foot, shown against jeans at the ankle and a grey carpet. The bold black outlines have simple inner details such as whiskers and eyes left as skin, with pink and red bows and small yellow nose details added in colour. The pair is placed symmetrically and the colour is clean and bright against the skin.

The fog has swallowed the mule bells again, so you tie a strip of red wool to the lead animal's halter and hope the sound carries up the switchbacks. Below you the track falls away into nothing. Above, the hut at Scarrow Col is a grey smudge with one lamp in its window, and you can just make out two shapes on the sill, sitting so still that you almost take them for stones.

The cats were Mrs Abernethy's before she died, and nobody in the valley has had the heart to move them. One is white with a red bow at the crown of her head, always tied fresh, though no one has seen her tie it. The other, Nettle, has a fringe of dark bristles that stands up like a crest when the wind turns. Last winter they walked the pass with the carriers every night, going ahead and stopping at each bend to wait, and no one ever got lost while they were in front. You have a sack of salt tied to your back and a letter for the shepherd's wife that has been in your coat for three days, damp at the corners.
The lamp goes out just as you reach the last rise. You stop, breathing hard, and feel your way forward with your palm on the rock. Then the fog thins and there they are, perched on a cairn at the edge of the ice, side by side, facing the same direction. When you step towards them they drop down and trot off without looking back, and in the thin light you see the snow ahead has been flattened into a path, narrow and certain, that you had not noticed before.
The shepherd's wife opens the door before you knock. She takes the letter, reads the first line and shakes her head. "They always know the way," she says, and sets down two saucers of milk on the step. When you turn to leave, the only tracks in the snow are yours, and two small sets beside them, neat as stitching, running all the way back down the hill.
