Small cat tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is raised in a peace sign, with a small black tattoo on the side of the middle finger near the base. The tattoo appears to be a simple outline of a cat's head with pointed ears and a few dots, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The background is out of focus, showing pale snowy trees, and a silver ring with a leaf-like pattern is worn on the adjacent ring finger.

Mind the step, it's iced over, and keep your hands off the rail, that's where the frost bites. Now. The cat I'm telling you about was called Mab, and she belonged to nobody, which is the only way a cat ever belongs to anybody worth knowing. She lived under the bridge at Stannard Mill, where the river never froze because it was too busy arguing with the stones. She had a mark on her brow like a little crown of four dots, and the millers used to say those were the four winters she had outlived.

The year the mill pond froze solid, the miller's boy, Tobias, went out after the geese and didn't come home before dark. The wind came down off the hills with snow in its teeth. Mab went after him, picking her way across the ice with her ears flat and her tail held high like a question nobody had asked yet. Every few steps she stopped, turned her head, and waited for the lantern light to catch the dots on her forehead, so the boy would know which way to walk.

She found him in the reeds by the sluice gate, boots full of water, mittens lost to the current. She didn't carry him, because cats don't. She sat on his chest until his breathing slowed and his eyes found hers, then she walked ahead one careful step at a time, stopping at every bend. Tobias followed those four pale dots all the way to the back door, where his mother was already shouting his name into the snow.

He grew old at that mill, and when he was too old to climb the bridge he still left a saucer on the rail every winter's night. Milk, with four drops of cream set in a row across the top. Nobody ever saw who came for it. But the dishes were always empty by morning, and there was always a faint line of pawprints in the frost, leading off towards the hills.
