Peace symbol on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand held up in a V shape, with a small peace symbol tattoo in black ink on one finger. The circle and lines are simple and outlined, and the tattoo is the only point of sharp focus. The background is out of focus, with soft green and dark tones, and the hand has red nail polish.

Sit down, the lot of you, and keep your sticky hands off my shawl. You want to know how Ada Crane came by her circle? Then mind me, because I was there the night the generator died on the Marsh Road fair and the whole field went black as a coal sack.

The Pryces and the Lowes had not spoken in eleven years. Over a grey pony, if you believe the Lowes, or over a crooked raffle, if you ask the Pryces. Their caravans stood at either end of the showground like two dogs guarding the same bone. Ada ran the waltzers for her uncle, and she was the only one who could stand in both camps without being spat at.
When the lights went out, the screaming started, then the cursing, and then somebody's brother swung a paraffin lamp at somebody else's head. Ada climbed onto the ticket box with a torch in her teeth. She held up two fingers, the old sign from when the fair was young, and kept them up until both families turned to look. Then she drew a small tight ring on her own finger with a biro and told them the wheel would only turn if everyone stopped pulling in opposite directions.
Nobody believed her. But the generator man crawled out from under his trailer, swore at the engine like a bishop, and got it coughing back to life. The Big Wheel lit up over the field like a wedding cake, and there were the Pryces and the Lowes, stood in the glare with their hands still raised, too proud to be the first to lower them. Ada wore that circle until the ink blurred. Two fingers, one ring, and not a single word of apology between the lot of them.
