Guitar silhouette tattoo on wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand makes the rock horns gesture against a textured white wall, with brown nail polish on the fingertips. A small, solid black guitar silhouette sits on the inner wrist, with no visible linework or shading. The composition is centred and plain, with the tattoo as the only detail on the skin.

The ferry at Hollin Reach would not take anyone across the black water until they had shown the sign. Nobody remembered why. The old keeper, Tamsin Vale, said her grandmother had told her the shape was a box that sang, and that the box had been carried by people who could drive the hard winter out of a room with a few strings. The children laughed at that and made the sign with their hands, first and little fingers up, thumb folded, and the ferrymen nodded and let them pass.

One autumn a boy named Oswin came down the tideline with a wooden box strapped to his back, shaped like a waist and a neck. He had found it in a drowned hall in the glass country. He could not make it speak. For three nights he sat on the jetty trying, and the ferrymen gathered to watch him fail, and nobody told him the box was only wood.

On the fourth night the wind dropped and Tamsin climbed down with a tin of wax and a length of gut she had kept since her wedding. She showed him how the strings were pulled, not struck, and how the sound came through the hollow body the way breath comes through a reed. He played one note badly. The water went still. A gull that had been sitting on the rail lifted off and circled the lamp.

Oswin crossed in the morning with the box on his back. At the far bank he turned, lifted his hand, and made the sign the children used. Tamsin raised hers back, and the ferry drifted out into the grey, carrying a song nobody on the water could yet hear.
