Small cat tattoo on the nape
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black outline of a seated cat sits at the back of the neck, just below the hairline. The woman is photographed from behind with her hair in a loose bun, and a tabby cat rests on her left shoulder. The image is mostly warm pink and grey tones, and the tattoo is the only ink visible.

She took the shelf above the parcels within the hour. She sat upright with her tail curled over her feet and watched every envelope that came through the hatch like a clerk checking a ledger. Nothing got past her. When the Dunbar brothers came in with their pension forms she turned her back on them, and Mrs Kerr said it was the most honest review the office had ever received.
In January the ferry stopped for eleven days. The shelf got colder, and by the third week she had moved down to the stove and was stealing the warm spot from the kettle. One grey afternoon I found a brown envelope wedged behind the stamp drawer, addressed in faded ink to the postmistress of Corrach, a name I did not know, and it had never been franked. Inside was a single sheet with a pencil drawing of a seated cat, tail round its feet, and under it a line in a stranger's hand: keep the post moving.
When the ferry finally came back in April, the Dunbar brothers stood in the queue with their forms and nodded at the empty shelf. Nobody had to tell her she was in charge. She had been in charge since the crate.
