Small cat outline on the back of the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph taken from behind shows a woman with her hair up in a loose bun, held with clips, and a tabby cat resting on her shoulder. A small black cat outline sits on the back of her neck, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The warm red and orange striped background and the soft, vintage-looking colour grade dominate the composition.

Dear Maud, the cat has come back, the brown tabby with the nick in his left ear, and he has taken to sitting on the wall beside the runner beans as though he pays the rates. I told Frank's nephew to leave the side gate on the latch for him. I know you'll think me soft, but a creature that crosses three gardens and the allotment path to find a warm step deserves a saucer of something.

He keeps to a timetable. Every evening at six he drops from the potting shed roof, walks the length of the path past the sweet peas, and settles on the bench where Frank carved his initials the summer before he went into hospital. He sits there with his tail wrapped round his feet, neat as a full stop, and watches the Hendersons' kitchen window as if he has business with them. Mrs Henderson says he is after her fish. I say he is only checking that she still has them.

This week he brought me a wood pigeon feather, laid on the bench like a receipt. I didn't know what to make of it until I found the same feather tucked in the gap of the cold frame, which tells me he has been the sort of neighbour who keeps accounts. I have started putting the kettle on at a quarter to six so the tea is ready when he arrives.

Come up at Easter and bring the good secateurs, the ones with the green handles. The beans need pinching out and I am too stubborn to ask the nephew. The cat will be on the bench. He has no interest in anyone else, which I have decided not to take personally. Your loving sister, Ivy.
