Small feather tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single slender feather is drawn in thin black linework, angled diagonally up the outer ankle. The feather has a curved quill and fine strokes suggesting its barbs, with light shading along one side. The skin tone is warm and the blurred plaid fabric behind the foot keeps the focus on the small tattoo.

The gull had been nesting in the lamp housing for three weeks before Ada Penrose thought to climb up and look. By then the glass was crusted with droppings and the clockwork had jammed on a single tooth of brass. She lifted the cover with the wrench her husband had left on the hook, and among the grit and dried fish bones lay one long feather, grey at the tip, curved like a question mark on a slate.

She carried it down to the kitchen in her apron pocket. Tom was due on the Thursday boat from Penzance, his first leave since the Gannet went down off the Stones, and she had not yet decided what to say about the loose rail or the bank letter on the dresser. The feather she set on the windowsill, where the grey light caught its barbs and split them into thin dark lines, each one a hair's width from the next.
Thursday came wet. Tom stood on the step with his cap in both hands, thinner than his letters had made him sound, and he looked past her at the tower as though counting something. Ada did not ask him what. She handed him the feather instead, and he turned it over, then looked up toward the gallery where the lamp had been lit for the first time in a month, a pale blade cutting the dusk.
'It came out of the lantern,' she said. 'I thought you should know something had been living up there and getting along fine without us.' He laughed, a short startled sound, and tucked the quill inside his coat, against the pocket where he kept the letters she had written him. Outside, the beam swung round, the wind tore the door from her hand and banged it against the wall, and neither of them went to shut it.
