A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lotus came up through the mud of the Ouse every spring, Mrs Pargeter used to say, and it never once asked permission from the cold. She said it at the kitchen table in Selby while her grandson Tomas picked the dried seed heads from a jar of pond weed he had no business keeping. He was nine and had brought it home from the pond behind the sluice gates, against all instructions.

His mother had gone north for a season's work at the fish processing plant, and the flat above the chip shop smelled of vinegar and wet coats. Mrs Pargeter kept the radiator on full and the window cracked, which she said was how a sensible woman kept her sanity. Tomas asked her whether flowers could really grow in mud. She told him they grew because of the mud, that the roots needed something to hold on to in the dark, and then she got up to see to the kettle, which was her way of ending a conversation she had decided to finish later.

Later, when the rain had stopped and the gulls were fighting over the bins below, Tomas found her at the window with her sleeve pushed up, tracing a small shape on the inside of her wrist with one thumb. He saw the petals, five of them, drawn in a thin black line that had faded to the colour of a pencil. She had had it done in 1961, she said, in a booth in Hull, the week before she married a man who later left. She did not say whether she regretted it. She only said the petals were a bit crooked, and that she had always liked them that way.
