Small cross tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small upright cross sits on the inner wrist, below the base of the hand. The linework is thin and even, and the ink looks pale against the skin. The hand is raised with the fingers curled toward the top of the frame, set against a plain deep red background.

Dear Tom, the big top came down on Tuesday in a drizzle that couldn't decide whether to be rain. Father sat on the water barrel and watched every guy rope slacken as if he were counting breaths. You would not believe how small the ring looks once the seats are stacked. The sawdust has turned to grey paste, the two lions went to a zoo in Leicester, and the calliope is missing a wheel, so it wheezes like a lung.

Auntie Fen has mended canvas since before either of us was born, and on the last night she took me round the back and showed me the patches. Every tear is stitched with thread the colour of the tent it came from, and at the centre of each one she draws a tiny cross in chalk so she can find the spot again in the dark. I asked why, since nobody else would ever look. She said the cross was for the sewing, not the looking, so the needle knows where it has already been.

I have been thinking about that all week. Tomorrow I walk down to the station with the spare pole over my shoulder and the chalk stub in my coat pocket. Before I left the field I drew one small cross on the post where the bunting used to hang, so whoever comes after knows we were here. The rain will have it off by Friday, and that's fine. Write to me at the Leeds address and tell me what the lions were called in the end.

Love, Nell
