Small cross on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet are shown with one crossed over the other, and a small solid black cross sits on the outer ankle of the lower foot. The cross has clean, even edges and is set against smooth skin, with the rest of the frame showing a paved surface, a metal railing and green foliage. The palette is neutral apart from the mint nail polish on the toes.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night porter at St Brannock's had a rule about the east stairwell, and it was older than he was. Nobody mopped it after midnight, and nobody propped its fire door. When Dennis asked why, the sister on the wards told him about the miller's wife from Hollin Fell, who had walked down to the infirmary in the snow with a lamp and a child under her shawl, and had been turned away at the front desk because the child had a cough and visiting hours were over.

She went round to the back, where the cold store was, and sat on the step until morning. The porter on duty then was a man called Ambrose Teale, who had a bad hip and a worse temper, and he found her there at six. He carried the child in himself. The child lived. Teale scratched a small cross into the step with his door key, so the next one who came in the dark would know the place had opened once for someone who needed it.

Dennis said that was a nice story. The sister said it wasn't a story, it was the step, and walked him round the back to show him. The cross was there, worn almost flat under a century of boots, sitting by the drain where a cleaner's bucket always seemed to stand. Nobody had ever had the heart to scrub it out.

On the night he finished his last shift before retiring, Dennis knelt on the cold concrete with a torch and found it still there, a neat little mark no bigger than a thumbnail. He left the door on the latch for the rest of the night, and in the morning the bucket had been moved aside, as if somebody had been careful with it.
