Snowflake tattoo on a foot

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

Two bare feet are shown from a low angle, with dark nail polish on the toes. A cluster of blue-teal snowflakes with a trailing swirl sits on the foot near the big toe. The linework looks thin and the ink is a single cool blue, with soft natural lighting and a plain background.

Sit closer, the fire is only warm where you're sitting, and I will not have you going out to the privy in this. This one shut on the feast of Saint Brigid, and Tamsin Reeve came through the door with her hood full of snow and a case of brass instruments under her arm.

She was a surveyor's widow, she said, and she had come to find out what her husband had been measuring up here before the fever took him. He had left a notebook. Every page held a snowflake, drawn in pencil with a ruler and a glass, six arms each, none quite the same as the one before. Seven hundred and twelve of them. Tamsin read them to me by the lamp the first night, and by the third night the whole room had stopped talking to listen.

On the last morning the wind dropped and the sky went the colour of a pewter spoon. Tamsin took her brass glass out to the step and caught a flake on a square of black cloth before it could melt. She held it up to the light and went so quiet I thought she had frozen. Then she laughed, a bright, startled sound, and said, 'He never made a mistake. Every one of them is only ever almost the same.'

She left the notebook with me and walked down the valley toward the road as the sun broke through. It still sits on the shelf above the till. Some mornings I go up with my own glass and count the arms.
