The boat went out on Tuesday without you, and I have been trying all week to find the right way to say that. Mr Pryce at the chandlery still has your old oilskin on the back hook, and he won't let anyone move it. Mother says to leave it be. So I am leaving it be.

You asked in your last letter whether the three stars still show above the breakwater when the mist comes in off the Wrack. They do. Father's rule holds: the big one first, then the middle, then the small one tucked under them like a dropped coin. Line them up with the harbour light and you know where the sandbar is before the bell buoy finds you. I tried it on Sunday with the lamp unlit and got it right, which surprised me more than it should have.

Enclosed is the card you left on the dresser. Your initials are on the back in Father's hand, the way he marked everything he thought he would need again. I found it in the tin under the stove while I was looking for matches.

Come home at Christmas if the tide lets you. The stars will be out early, and you can show me how you sight them from the deck. Tell me honestly if you still remember.
