The big top at Pemberton's had been patched so many times that the canvas looked like a map of the towns we no longer visited. By August the stars painted on its inside roof had faded to three, the rest lost to rain and a bad winter in a shed near Crewe. Mum counted them every morning from the centre ring with a cup of tea going cold in her hand, as if counting could keep the takings from leaving.

Dougie the tumbler had a bet with the farrier from Stoke that the tent would not see the autumn. Dougie lost, and the farrier took the last two wagons for his trouble. What remained was me, a slack wire strung between two poles, and a flask of cheap brandy hidden under the sawdust. I was fourteen and believed falling was the worst thing a person could do in front of a crowd, right up until the night the generator died during the flying act and nobody fell at all.

In the dark the only light was the torch Mum held up to the roof. Above the trapeze, three stars showed through the canvas where the paint had held. The smallest sat highest, then a bigger one, then the largest near the rigging, as if someone long ago had tried to draw us a way down.

Mum sold the poles in Carlisle and kept the torch. I still count stairs the way she counted stars, smallest to largest, all the way down.
