The bell at Harrowmere had not rung in nine years, not since the miller's boy fell through the ice, and so when the new ferryman came up the river with a crate of nails and a cross of blackened iron slung across his back, the village women said it was an omen and the men said it was a cheap joke. Mother Aske went down to the landing with a loaf wrapped in cloth. The ferryman was young and sunburnt and asked her for nothing but a place to hang his lantern.

He hung it on a hook beside the door of the ferry house, and each night the light crossed the water to the far bank where the drowned were said to walk looking for the road home. By midsummer the children had stopped running from the lantern and started counting the nights it burned. The ferryman kept a ledger of crossings in a leather book, and when the widow Penhallow asked to see it, he turned the pages slowly so she could read the names of everyone who had gone over and everyone who had come back.
In autumn the river rose and took the lower bridge. The ferryman worked the boat alone through three days of rain, carrying the carter's cows, the baker's daughter and a coffin over the brown water, and on the third night he came back to the landing with his hands raw and a small iron cross hanging loose at his collar. Mother Aske asked him why he wore it on the wrong side. He said it was so the lantern could always find him.
