The snow came down on the Tuesday and didn't lift until Thursday, so the sledge from the bothy was late, and Mrs Gow at the shop has been asking after you like a dog at a gate. I have kept your post in the tin under the stairs. There is a letter from the Board about the lease and a seed catalogue you will be cross about, because you never ordered it.

Father's cross still stands at the head of the tussock path where the peat cutting ends. You will remember the little one he scratched into the cairn stone with the point of a compass, the year the Ferguson boy went through the ice on the tarn and we did not find him until the thaw. I walked out there on Wednesday with the dog and a flask. I did not go as far as the tarn. I am not going to be sentimental about it. Come home by the twelfth. Bring the good matches and the spare boots, and walk the last mile with your hand out in front of you, so I can see where you are.
