Outline cactus on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small cactus with two arms is drawn in a single thin black outline on the side of an ankle. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits against pale skin. Rolled light-blue denim sits above it, and a flat, sandy desert with distant hills and a clear sky fills the background.

Dear Tomas, the bus from Tabernas dropped me at the crossroads at noon, and I walked the last four kilometres with your old canvas bag on my shoulder because the strap was the only thing I could find that did not smell of diesel. Mother will tell you I was foolish. She is probably right, but the hills were the colour of biscuit and the sky was so clean it hurt, and I kept thinking of the cactus on the windowsill in Granada that you swore would die the week you left it.

It did not die. Señora Ruiz had watered it with the dregs of her coffee, which she says is the secret, and it had put out a third arm as thick as my thumb. I took a cutting from the base of the second arm, wrapped it in newspaper, and asked her to let it dry for a fortnight before she planted it. She laughed at me, but she did it, and the cutting is in my coat pocket now, sealed in a jam jar with a lid punched for air.
I am writing this at the monastery gate, where the monks sell honey and nothing else. Brother Anselmo sat with me on the bench and said a cactus does not hurry, which is the first sensible thing anyone has told me since I left home. He asked whose it was. I said it was yours, really, and he nodded as though that explained a great deal.
The sun is going down behind the ridge now and the ground has gone the colour of cooling bread. I will plant the cutting at the edge of the herb garden tomorrow, where the brothers say the soil drains best. If it takes, I will send you a photograph. If it does not, you may tell Mother I was right about the coffee.
